Dr Matthias Desmet

Dr. Matthias Desmet graduated in Medicine in 2001 and finished his training as anaesthesiologist in 2006 at the KU Leuven. After a Fellowship in Intensive Care Medicine, UZ Gasthuisberg, Leuven (Prof Greet Van den Berghe) and Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care, St Michaels Hospital, Toronto (Prof P. Houston), he started as staff anesthetist at AZ Groeninge Hospital Kortrijk (Belgium).
In 2018 he received his PhD degree following research related to “Quality Improvement of Regional Anaesthesia”.
Since 2020, he is the head of the Anesthesia Department of the AZ Groeninge Hospital. He is a board member of the Belgian Association of Regional Anesthesia and President of the same organization since 2024. His main interests are locoregional anesthesia, clinical research and education. He participated as speaker and instructor in multiple national and international meetings on regional anesthesia. He was rewarded the ESRA Albert Van Steenberghe Award in 2015 for his publication on the use of i.v. dexamethasone in brachial plexus blocks.
